Linear relationships are used to represent real life relationships that demonstrate a constant rate of change. Linear relationships can be used to create linear equations that will allow you to make predictions. We have studied linear relationships and linear equations including the slope-intercept form of a linear equation (y = mx + b). In this project you will be using this knowledge to explore real life linear relationships and create your own linear equations and graphs.
The Assignment
You will investigate all three of the real world relationships below and then choose one to do. The categories are comparing cell phone plans, burning calories, and statistics from the NBA. You will gather data on your subject, write an equation, and create a graph in Microsoft Excel.
The Steps
1. Look at the following three real life-situations
a.) Buying a Cell Phone
b.) Burning Calories
c.) NBA Statistics
2. Depending on what topic you choose, click on the links below to get started on your project.
a.) Burning Calories Worksheet
b.) Buying a Phone Worksheet
c.) Basketball Statistics Worksheet
3. Go to one of these linked sites to investigate your topic.
a.) Burning Calories
b.) Buying a Phone
c.) NBA Statistics
4. Using the data you find, complete the worksheet for the topic you have chosen. The worksheets must be typed and handed in, along with a printed copy of your graph. (Color graphs are preferable, but if you do not have access to a color printer, black and white is acceptable.)
5. Using your data, create a linear graph by using Microsoft Excel. For instructions on how to create your graph in Excel, click here.
You can earn up to 15 extra credit points on this project. Good luck!
